My research interests encompass biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships, ranging from the gene to the ecosystem level, extending over ecologically diverse habitats and landscapes (urban ecology, agro-ecology), comprising a broad variety of organisms and different spatial and temporal scales (night ecology), and testing mechanisms and theories of modern basic and applied ecology (restoration ecology, invasion ecology).

Urban Ecology

I am interested in factors affecting biodiversity patterns and ecosystem functioning in the urban ecosystem. In particular, my research is centred on how species change their interactions and traits with consequences for ecosystem resilience and functioning.

MSc student: Matthias Kyburz

Night Ecology

In this field of research I investigate the diversity and role of nocturnal pollinators and how they are affected by artificial light at night.

PhD student: Simone Giavi

Invasion Ecology

The main focus of my research in invasion ecology is on the impact of invasive species on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and what the underlying mechanisms are. I have mainly worked with the model species Arion vulgaris (syn. A. lusitanicus) which counts as one of the 100 worst invasive species of Europe.

The main focus of my research in agro-ecology is on how management practises (i.e. intensification of agriculture, restoration measures) affect biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In particular, I am currently involved in the improvement and effectiveness of sown flower stripes for increasing pollinators and pollination in the rural environment. The sown flower stripes will soon be part of the Swiss agri-environment scheme that aims to counteract the negative consequences of intensification of agriculture for biodiversity.
