Invasion Ecology

Invasive alien species have become one of the major threats to global biodiversity and the human economy. The rate of unintended introductions of alien species by human transportation and subsequent problems caused by those that become established and invasive is expected to further increase. Still, the mechanisms leading to a successful establishment and spread of invasive species are not yet fully understood. Also, we still do not know the impact of invasive species on the native flora and fauna and the ecosystem. We thus seek to further advance our understanding of causes and ecological consequences of biological invasions (Wolfgang Nentwig, Eva Knop).

Currently, we have a particular interest in analyses of the pathways of alien spiders into Switzerland. We also want to analyse the impact of the worst alien species to European environment and economy by applying an impact assessment tool (Wolfgang Nentwig).
